P.E at Calverley ParksideAt Calverley Parkside all children have at least 2 hours of week timetabled each week. P.E lessons will involve learning skills in gymnastics, dance, games activities, athletics and outdoor and adventurous activities. Key stage 2 also do games lessons to develop a variety of skills and team games. Swimming is taught in Year Four and we aim to ensure that all children can swim 25m by the end of primary school.
Physical activity is also incorporated into all break times and lunchtimes. Each tier group (Years 1 and 2, Years 3 and 4 and Years 5 and 6) have a timetabled Sports Break each day. The children are involved in practicing skills for a specific sport, including basketball, netball and handball. Children also have the opportunity to play dodgeball and football during break times. Sports leaders help to organise and run these activities.
Calverley Parkside have a Sports Development Manager, Holly Whyte, who is employed as part of the School Sports premium. Miss Whyte supports all of the children during their P.E lessons. She also organises mini tournaments during Sports Breaks and lunchtimes.
In the Summer term we have a mini Olympics week. The week begins with an opening ceremony then during the week the children are involved in a sports afternoon and competitive sports that the children play in Houses. The teams play against each other and earn House points.
The children have a variety of opportunities to be involved in sporting activities after school. Sports clubs after school throughout the year include athletics, netball, gymnastics, football and multi skills activities.
At Calverley Parkside we are committed to being involved in inter school competitions and the children are involved in tournaments and festivals organised by the School Sports Partnership at Priesthorpe Secondary School. The children in each year group are involved in a festival with children from at least two other schools. These events are organised by the Sports Leaders from Preisthorpe. Children also participate in events organised by the Airedale and Wharfedale School Sports Association, including football and athletics.
Year 6 are also involved in Bikeability which is a cycling proficiency course.
