Science

To enable the acquisition of a systematic, scientific approach to learning, developing useful knowledge, skills and attitudes about the world in which we live, our science curriculum is presented to our children in exciting, challenging and practical contexts. We aim to ensure that our pupils are equipped with the knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science today and in the future. Systematic inquiry, analysis of problems, formation of ideas, testing and modification are encouraged through investigations designed to arouse children’s natural curiosity.

The introduction of the new 2014 National Curriculum programme of study for science means that we will be introducing pupils to more ‘hard facts’, scientific knowledge and a greater priority on understanding and using scientific language.

Below are the topics covered in each of the year groups:

Year 1 & 2

Plants – common plants and basic structure
Animals, including humans – identify, name, describe and compare common animals and basic parts of the human body
Everyday materials
Seasonal changes – the four seasons
Living things and their habitats
Plants – seeds and bulbs, how plants need water and light to grow
Animals, including humans – offspring, needs for survival, exercise, food and hygiene
Uses of everyday materials
 

Year 3 & 4

Plants – life cycle of flowers, how water is transported in plants
Animals, including humans – nutrition, skeletons and muscles
Rocks – fossils and soil
Light – reflection and shadows
Living things and their habitats – classification keys, human impact on environments
Animals, including humans – digestive system, teeth, food chains
States of matter – solid, liquids, gases, evaporation and condensation
Sound – vibration, pitch and volume
Electricity – common appliances, simple circuits, series, switches, conductors and insulators
 

Year 5 & 6

Living things and their habitats – life cycles and reproduction
Animals, including humans – human development from birth to old age Properties and changes of materials – hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity, response to magnets
Earth and space – the solar system
Forces – gravity, air resistance, water resistance and friction, force and motion
Living things and their habitats – classification, characteristics and why we classify plants and animals
Animals, including humans – circulatory system, diet, exercise, lifestyle
Evolution and inheritance
Light – how light behaves
Electricity – voltage, simple circuit diagrams
