Our Learning  »  Promoting British Values

Maintained schools have obligations under section 78 of the Education Act (2002) which requires schools, as part of a broad and balanced curriculum, to promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society. The promotion of fundamental British values (FBV) is not new but has been given a clearer priority. The DfE Teachers Standards describes FBV in its simplest form as;

...fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

These aims are not always taught discretely but as part of broader learning including;
  • Religious Education
  • PSHE
We look to include our pupils in events that help them foster a better understanding of what it means to be growing up in modern Britain. This can include participating in national events (especially fundraising) and also looking in greater detail when the country as a whole gets involved in elections or celebrations.

The Prevent Duty
As part of a national project to help stop young people becoming radicalised, all staff and governors were invited to attend training in spring 2015. This training was delivered and staff made aware of their responsibilities. Please read the DfE advice below for more information.
